Efrain Diego Gonzalez – News Report Warning
Posted by admin in plastic surgeon credentials on November 7, 2012
For a long while I have emphasized that cosmetic surgery patients need to screen their prospective surgeons. I have presented you some simple internet-based Medical board sites that you can use to do exactly that.
My upcoming Hack Report series will serve to illustrate this once again. In this series I have not used the doctor’s names, such as to make the screening process generic.
To my simple online board screening we might add one more reasonable test: Google your prospective doctor. Why would I say this? Read on.
Try Goggling: Efrain Diego Gonzalez.
This is a man who has been the subject of an investigative journalism report and in that report a number of patient complaints have been found:
Dr. Efrain Diego Gonzalez started his Rocklin-based Advanced Medical Spa in 2007, where his low prices advertised online caught the attention of Northern California patients.
Learning to write by hand all over again, Rose now lives with a paralyzed right hand. Now she struggles to tie shoes, pick up keys or even sign her own name, she said. Rose said Gonzalez carelessly cut through two critical nerves during a breast augmentation — leaving part of her right hand completely numb and a noticeably different color than her left hand.
Another woman lost her nipple after a breast augmentation.
“It got infected and fell off,” Jenni said. According to Jenni, none of these patients knew Gonzalez’ background is in gynecology.
While Gonzalez claims on his resume to have taken numerous medical courses in cosmetic surgery, he was never formally trained in plastic surgery during his residency, which he admits in a deposition

Multiple damaged prior surgical patients? Kinda concerning.
So let’s check for medical board issues as I have suggested before:
In this case, the news reporter has beaten the boards to the punch in reporting on this doctor. His California Medical Board sheet reveals only:
Accusation Filed
Medical board actions do take time to become complete and therefore to be recorded.
Demanding American Board of Medical Specialists Certification might have helped the wise patient however as Dr Gonzalez claims training in Gynecology, but according to the ABMS web site has no board certification.
Something that the news reporter discovered that is not on these Medical Board web sites is that:
he was stripped off his medical license to practice in his native Puerto Rico in 2006.

These reports quote a 12 patient lawsuit and pretty severe injuries. You need to screen your surgeons everybody so you find what you need before you choose poorly.
Is Dr Gonzalez a worthy candidate for the Hack Report? We won’t know until these cases are complete, but would you allow him to operate on you?

Reader Question: The Way Some Patients Choose Plastic Surgeons
Posted by admin in plastic surgeon credentials on December 23, 2010
Reader Question:
Hi are you the doctor that was on OC housewives? Doing Botox on Alexa? If so, what are your prices for botox and filler? Do you use Dysport? I live in Newport Beach. Thanks…
Medical professionals are frequently taken back by the way some patients choose a prospective plastic surgeon. This lady e-mailed asking about an appearance on the OC Housewives show. I have been quoted in the OC Register speaking of the cast of the OC Housewives and their adventures with plastic surgery. I have been on the Eyewitness News recently on another issue. But to be honest I have not been on the OC Housewives show… at least not to date.
The woman didn’t ask about my residency training, board certifications or anything of the sort. Many patients do not care about these things. They want to be served by the guy they saw on television.

Can You Trust Plastic Surgery Internet Reviews?
Posted by admin in plastic surgeon credentials on December 3, 2010
Everything under the sun is reviewed on the internet, but can you trust interviews of plastic surgeons placed online?
This is a difficult question because reviews on the web regarding plastic surgery can be faked both ways. Some surgeons pay people to surf around and post nice things. I don’t of course.
The State of New York recently fined Lifestyle lift $300,000 for “encouraging” employees to post fake positive reviews:

I say this realizing that I still have pretty much good patient reviews online …lol. You need to look at the big picture when choosing a plastic surgeon. Check out your surgeon before you proceed so things go well.

Reader Question: Breast Implants by a Non-Plastic Surgery Board Certified Surgeon?
Posted by admin in plastic surgeon credentials on September 16, 2009
Reader Question:
I read online that [ doctor's name omitted] is giving away breast implant surgery. I checked him through the American Board of Medical Specialists web site abms.org and it says he is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. Is he a plastic surgeon? He says he is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Is it legal for non-plastic surgery board certified surgeons to do breast implants?
This is a complicated question. Board certification indicates the training that a doctor had after medical school. It appears that the doctor in which you are interested trained in Otolaryngology as a “Head and Neck” surgeon. You can see what that really means at Wikipedia.
One of your questions is how do you define a plastic surgeon. I went through formal residency training and certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This doctor did not. Many doctors who did not work in plastic surgery. Does that make them plastic surgeons? They would probably say yes.
Another question you asked is are non-plastic surgery board certified doctors permitted to do breast implant surgery. The answer is it depends upon where they do them. The doctor you describe would probably not be granted privileges to do breast implants in a hospital operating room. There would be a credentialing committee in the way. He probably does his surgery is an office-based surgery center that he may very well own.
My advice to people considering plastic surgery is to research your prospective surgeon carefully. The issue of board certification by an ABMS board is important to a hospital credentialing committee. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not an ABMS board. More information for your evaluation is outlined on my site linked below.

Reader Laura: “Why is it Legal?”
Posted by admin in plastic surgeon credentials on August 25, 2009
Reader Question:
Another patient beware story. It is scary that a Gyno can perform plastic surgery. I’m not sure why the medical establishment hasn’t addressed this yet since so many people are being harmed by doctors that are not trained to perform plastic surgery. What are the rules in CA? Can a Dentist perform plastic surgery as well?
There are relatively few solid rules here. There are plenty of gynecologists performing liposuction. Most of these cases are performed outside of regulated surgical facilities and hospitals. It is hard to regulate surgery performed in a medical office.
This just goes to once again underscore the importance of patients doing their own research on a given surgeon before allowing him or her to operate upon them.

Blogger Question: “Researching Doctors?”
Posted by admin in plastic surgeon credentials on April 27, 2009
Megan sent this question:
So, how would you recommend researching doctors. I’m looking at a Dr. [name deleted] here in Scottsdale AZ for rhinoplasty. Has anyone heard anything about him? Other than looking at his website, I’m not sure what to do.
Basic online plastic surgeon research is pretty easy. My site is specific for California, but you can check the Arizona Medical Board as opposed to the California Medical Board when looking for complaints. Good luck!

Many of the TV Docs aren’t Board-certified?!

“Shocking but true — Dr. Jan Adams isn’t the only non-board certified doctor on television these days.”
Yep, a bunch of the television plastic surgeons aren’t board-certified in plastic surgery. Maybe something good will come of the tragic story of Donda West.
