California Sues Plastic Surgeon For Trying To Get Paid
Posted by admin in Are You Kidding Me?, plastic surgery news on September 18, 2012
California has filed suit against a South Pasadena plastic surgeon for her aggressive billing tactics, including lawsuits, taking out liens on clients’ homes and damaging their credit, according to the Los Angeles Times. Jeannette Martello, who owns a private practice and used to provide emergency services to Huntington Memorial Hospital, is being accused of using unlawful methods to obtain “reasonable and customary” pay for out-of-network services. The California Department of Managed Health Care called the suit against Martello the first of its kind. State officials allege that she collected or attempted to collect more from patients than insurance companies paid. Martello’s lawyer said she was “very persistent” about collecting bills, but added that she lawfully pursued her rights to recoup fees for her services.

I live and work in a crazy state. Authorities in California have validated this statement by suing a plastic surgeon for trying to get paid. Dr Jeannette Martello was foolish enough (as I was for over a decade) to offer emergency plastic surgery services and believe that she might be paid fairly for them.
I have discussed before the process I went through for the fourteen years before I gave up emergency room call. Dr Martello went another route by more aggressively seeking payment when services were not reimbursed fairly. Take into account that medicine unlike most other businesses is afflicted by the notion that a third party should decide what a service should be paid. Insurance companies pay what they want and the government has supported them.
Most good plastic surgeons eventually figure that emergencies are a ridiculous proposition and stop accepting them. After all, who seeks to run around at ungodly hours and not be paid reasonably or consistently? No one who is sane or solvent.
I can’t help but root for Dr Martello on this one.

Extreme Plastic Surgery Art Gallery?
Posted by admin in Are You Kidding Me?, plastic surgery news on June 6, 2012
Phillip Toledano’s latest exhibition, titled, “A New Kind Of Beauty” is heading for Los Angeles. The photo series captures classical portraits of subjects who had extreme cosmetic surgery; each model has undergone a combination of procedures including nose jobs, eyelid lifts, breast and pec implants, and collagen injections. The transformative procedures make the models look almost inhuman, and yet the portraits suggest a new frontier of beauty, perhaps one that has not even fully evolved yet.
The models — dubbed “Botox Botticellis,” by the Daily Mail and other sites — are rendered like traditional Renaissance portraits, semi-nude with their chiaroscuro skin glistening. Rather than being depicted as sensational or abnormal, however, the models appear proud and determined.

What can you say about this?
While many of us in plastic surgery have the goal in mind to enhance that which is natural, there are those who celebrate that which many of us find scary. We have become a society that celebrates the extreme, so why not have models that some would find horrifying proudly proclaiming their differences?
While I support people’s right to modify themselves as they see fit, these are not my patients. If anything, this underscores the fact that plastic surgeons operate under their own particular philosophies and choosing correctly is certainly in a patient’s best interest.

Orange County Tummy Tuck Scar Burn Case
Posted by admin in Are You Kidding Me? on November 11, 2011
A Costa Mesa cosmetologist was charged Thursday with practicing medicine without a license after she allegedly caused second-degree burns while attempting cosmetic surgery on a tummy tuck scar with a laser.
You gotta love this one: a lady gets burned when allowing a Cosmetologist to use a laser to treat her tummy tuck scar. When you want a scar treated maybe look into a plastic surgeon for a scar revision?

In the department store window, curiosity defines a child. Could this be a future labiaplasty surgeon in the making?

Frequent Tanning May Be Addictive
Posted by admin in Are You Kidding Me? on October 13, 2011
This funky study looked at people who tan frequently. Giving them opiate blockers induced a withdrawal response. The inference is that tanning frequently plays in your body chemically like opiate addiction.

Beth at Blue Star Chronicles did a much better job than I could have with the story of Anna Nicole Smith. It has little to do with plastic surgery, but was a spectacle at the time.

Woman Injects Beef Fat Into Face and Dies
Posted by admin in Are You Kidding Me?, Injection Hell on September 13, 2011
In one of the more bizarre DIY plastic surgery stories, an Illinois woman has injected beef fat into her face and died:
The woman, Janet Hardt, injected hot beef fat around her mouth and chin, a practice those close to her say she has done on multiple occasions. Why? The initial reports don’t give any indication as to what prompted this dangerous routine, though one might presume that it was some sort of wrinkle-reduction or anti-aging routine.
The injections caused infections in her face, but those did not contribute to her death. The autopsy reports say that Hardt died of peritonitis, “a severe abdominal inflammation caused by a bacterial infection suffered because of weakened walls in her colon.”

While the practice is hardly recommended, it does illustrate the length to which some people will go to take matters into their own hands. Too bad there are no available images of the woman to illustrate the burns and infection that would make this a poor practice, so that others might get the idea. DIY plastic surgery (as this was likely the woman’s motive) can have disastrous results. The more common example is the injection of liquid silicone which is actually more commonly linked to death.

Attempts to duplicate a movie stunt landed one man in the hospital with burned genitals and another facing criminal charges. The men were trying to do a stunt from one of the “Jackass” movies, in which a character lights his genitals on fire. Jared W. Anderson, 20, suffered serious burns to his hands and genitals, according to the criminal complaint.

I feel for any plastic surgeon who may have been called on this one. Intellectual Darwinism perhaps?

Chinese Plastic Surgery Scandal
Posted by admin in Are You Kidding Me?, plastic surgery news on May 5, 2011
Liu, 54, the latest figure to be “outed”, used to be known for having become head of the Bank of China in Shanghai at the relatively young age of 40. He was then promoted to chief executive of the bank’s subsidiary in Hong Kong, and finally made deputy chairman of the parent company in Beijing, before being implicated in a real estate scandal in Shanghai.
His trial last year, where he received a suspended death sentence, was not held in public, but a specialist legal paper claims to have been leaked court documents.

This one is interesting on several levels:
(1) The Former Head of the Bank of China in Hong Kong has been convicted of spending almost £300,000 on plastic surgery for his mistress, in the latest of a series of sex scandals exposed in the state-run media.
(2) His trial last year, where he received a suspended death sentence, was not held in public, but a specialist legal paper claims to have been leaked court documents.
(3) He was only convicted on non-violent crimes mainly accepting bribes from that which I can determine.
(4) To make his mistress “perfect,” he sent her to cosmetic surgery clinics in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Britain, armed with a photograph of Chen Chen, his old girlfriend from school.
We in America do not have the market cornered on scandal (or much else) anymore it seems.
