Lipodissolve – Be Careful.

Mesotherapy is a popular request these days. The idea that you can melt away fat without liposuction is attractive. Mesotherapy works by injecting a “fat dissolver” under the skin (subcutaneous injection.) The problem is that these therapies are unstudied although they have been offered in Europe for years. In the video clip linked above, Lipodissolve is featured in a Minnesota news story. They don’t tell you that the material injected has a warning against it in Great Britain (by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)) and the manufacturer does not recommend injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection.) This is the technique used in these cases.

These therapies need to be studied. I do not offer them and would not recommend them.

Sears Outlet Mall – Santa Ana – Wasted Time

When I think of an outlet mall, I think of a place to get a deal on good merchandise. The Mrs and I took a trip to the Sears Outlet Mall in Santa Ana California a week or so ago. What a waste of time.

There were mediocre at best deals on much more than minimally damaged goods. We got a better deal at Best Buy on a new refrigerator.

I think Sears is destined to fall prey to the economy.

Sauna Belt Infomercial Rant

Walking through the doctor’s lounge at the hospital there was an “info-mercial” playing for some weight loss belt called the “Sauna Belt.”

People are losing inches around the waist in an hour. Yeah, that’s the effect of compressing and heating your fat. Measure your waist in another hour (without the belt) and it will be back. They say it is due to sweating. Are people naive enough to believe they can lose inches in an hour by sweating and have it stay off?

This sells to the average American who wants results and wants to do nothing to achieve them. Am I just jaded or will this thing sell?

Medicine is regulated, but this piece of garbage isn’t. Go figure.

A User reports on a $2999 Breast Implant Outfit

Hi I just felt like I should post this based on my horrible experience with the “my choice medical” company. I would not recommend their services even if I hated you. First off when I called the 1800beyourbest.com website was different and could have been held for false advertising because they did not clearly indicate that you save 1000 for each procedure only if paid in cash or credit not through their financing plan. So if you finance not only do you pay financing interest but then an extra 1,000. It did however mention the small operating room fee and that there were no gimmicks. Well the Breast Aug. was 2999 pre-fee and if you got the 1,000 off. You pay 500 for a consult which they wouldn’t give back but if you go ahead with the procedure it gets applied to it. So the real cost of the procedure ended up being around 4,999 except that Dr. they sent me up with (note there’s few options in each area) works out of a house with an operating room within (shady as hell), the guy was very unfriendly barely uttered a word just took a picture and I was warned prior that he was very particular and did things only one way, his, or wouldn’t do it.

Cheap cosmetic surgery may not be. Read the fine print.

I am very selective about the use of finance companies in my practice and don’t associate with funky companies. They can be very sneaky. When they don’t make their money the old fashioned way many resort to tricks. The “surgeon doing your breast implant operation in his house” thing was hilarious.

Caution with Threadlifts

OK. Call me an old “stick in the mud,” but I am not so sure about these “Thread Lifts.” Those that offer the technique will say I am protecting my interests.

Sorry, but I just don’t like taking chances with your face.

The concept is to provide face lift type improvement without the surgery. The method is the placement of a number of funky barbed sutures that hold the face up internally. This is done under local anesthesia in the office.

I will be interested to see how these patients do over the long term. As far as I know there are no patients ten to twenty years out yet. A newly-operated patient was found frightening a mammography tech at my local hospital. It seems that one of the local internists is offering the technique to supplement his income. There may be good outcomes here. The real question is how are the statistics and how difficult might it be to fix one that goes bad?

If board-certified plastic surgeons thought this procedure would be so wonderful, we would offer it as well. A quick perusal of the internet finds the majority of practitioners offering this procedure are not plastic surgeons. We must just want to work too hard I guess.

Perhaps we will just have to wait ten years to see how the patients do long term. I would look at this procedure as an experiment folks.

Awake Tummy Tuck – “Are You Crazy?”

An Emergency Room doctor in Texas is marketing the “Awake Tummy Tuck.” Apparently she removes some skin under local (numbing shots only) and is touting this as better than the alternative:

Source: theplasticsurgerychannel.com/features/awake-tummy-tuck-too-good-to-be-true.html

In my duties as an expert witness for the California Medical Board, some of the most terrifying cases I have reviewed have involved non-plastic surgeons trying to perform tummy tuck surgery. They simply don’t know what they are doing. In this case it sounds like the surgery is likely quite limited as a surgeon is not going to be able to tighten much under just local anesthesia. It will not compare to what I do in a “real” tummy tuck, but it will be cheaper.

I figure this is a scream. You will either scream during the surgery because you are not adequately under anesthesia or scream afterward because you do not look any better. Caveat emptor.

Reader Laura on Zeltiq

Reader Laura’s Comment:

I’m not sure if I’ve sent you anything on this “new” procedure before or not. It does seem that every month there is a new/better procedure available for those willing to try them. This “new” procedure is supposed to freeze your fat cells and be safer than surgery or needles.

King 5

Remember when you asked about Zerona and I said it looks like a gimmick to me? Zeltiq looks like a variation on a very similar theme. This time we will use cold to kill the fat as opposed to light. There is of course no good objective evidence that this does much of anything.

I doubt this freezing non-invasive technique accomplishes much in the average patient. Safe and effective might be two different things here. We’ll see how this one is received as time passes.

MakeMeHeal Question: Zerona?

MakemeHeal Question:

I’m a reporter with makemeheal.com, looking to write an article on Zerona, and I just wanted to drop you a line to see if you might have some insight on the subject.

I’m interested in what those in the industry think of the procedure — what you know about it, what you’ve heard about it and how patients have responded to it.

Zerona is looking like a gimmick procedure thus far. I first posted on it in the middle of last year. Currently at realself.com, the procedure is rocking a 22% favorable rating which is not so hot.

The Pro is pretty much that it does not involve traditional surgery. It is a laser treatment typically offered as six treatments over two weeks or so.

The Con is that it seems to do little if anything.

I admit that I am a traditionalist in the sense that I do not try new things until there is some objective evidence that they work. I will be unlikely to try Zerona for that reason.

Although this procedure seems low risk, my patients do actually expect treatments I offer to work and I am the Cosmeticsurgerytruth.com guy. I offer appropriate patients liposuction and those with too little to warrant surgery are advised accordingly.
