Heidi Montag and The “Happy Medium”
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery, celebrity plastic surgery club on January 27, 2010
In the wake of Heidi Montag’s plastic surgery marathon, the concept of the happy medium plays. If Heidi had not had 10 (or 30) or whatever huge amount of procedures performed, she wouldn’t have made the transformation from Heidi to “Stepford wife.” There were those two years ago after she did her nose and breasts the first time who were aghast.
Cosmetic surgery can make changes to make you look like a “better” version of yourself or can be taken farther to make you look like someone else. As we have said here before this is a matter of philosophy and my conservative philosophy costs me money. Needless to say, encouraging people to do less so they retain more of their identity is a minority opinion in plastic surgery.
Then again Heidi Montag is a reality star…..reality again showcases the extreme. Ironic but true. Some of her comments about the actual day of surgery were probably blown out of proportion just like the surgery itself…my opinion of course:
What do I mean by the happy medium? The surgery of 2007 was the happy medium in my way of thinking. A little tweaking would have been better than the overhaul she just had. Then again if she is happy that is fine with me.

Heidi Montag’s Surgeon Frank Ryan and Malpractice Claims
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on January 20, 2010
According to Radar Online, Heidi Montag’s plastic surgeon Frank Ryan has been accused of negligence several times in the past on multiple procedure cases.

Multiple procedures in one operative adventure are good for headlines but not always so good for results. It is not universally held that such marathons are the best way to do things.
For the record, the California Medical Board web site does not indicate any disciplinary actions. The American Board of Medical Specialists site indicates that he was board certified in plastic surgery in 1998.

Caroline Morahan and Dr Rey Story
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on January 20, 2010
Budding actress Caroline Morahan has been advised to have Botox to improve her image in LA.
Caroline (33), who moved to Hollywood last year, said that plastic surgeon to the stars Dr Robert Rey approached her about cosmetic surgery.
The former Off The Rails presenter will host TV3′s The Cosmetic Show: What A Load Of Botox alongside the surgeon.
She told TV Now that Dr Rey asked her if she had had any procedure to make her lips fuller.
“I never felt so conscious in my life because he was scanning every inch of me,” Caroline revealed.
“He asked me had I had anything done to my lips and I said: ‘You of all people should know I’ve nothing done’.”
That’s interesting. Usually the patients come to the surgeon not the other way around. Of course the story might be a PR tease and not true…..

Sharon Stone: No Plastic Surgery?
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on January 19, 2010
Sharon Stone:
She tells Tatler magazine, “I have had zero, nothing done to myself: no lifting, no Botox, no injectables. I did try something once and I saw myself in a movie and didn’t like the way I looked. I thought I looked like I had a giant balloon head, and I felt it wasn’t for me.
She has had something at some point as she just indicated, so maybe she means nothing really big yet like a full face lift. Maybe she means nothing lately? With Sharon Stone, who knows?

Reader Laura on Sono Bello Salon Complications
Posted by admin in plastic surgery complications, plastic surgery news on January 7, 2010
Reader Laura’s Comment:
Patient (Dr. Teresa Yagi ) was burned during a cosmetic laser treatment. She thought it would be no big deal and admits that she didn’t do her homework on this. She wound up with burns on her face and her hands. Another patient had lipo and experienced a side-effects of the lipo – a blood clot. When she went in for a consult she was told that it would be a simple procedure and that the way that they do the procedure there would be less risk than done the normal way.
The web site for Sono Bello and the promotional materials, said “We have ruled out the major risks and complications that existed with traditional liposuction by introducing the use of micro instruments and laser assistance! Many patients feel so good they resume normal activities the next day.”

Sono Bello is a company breaking into the cosmetic market. They mainly do liposuction is in that way they resemble other such companies. They also advertise a fair amount. Take into account that the quality of individual surgeons and their practice philosophies vary quite a bit too.
Most of the promotional information of any commercial company is exactly that. Just check out your surgeon when you go for cosmetic surgery anywhere. Surgery comes with risk. Understand that and try to minimize it.

Reader Question: What Does A Sebaceous Skin Cyst Look Like?
Reader Question:
My doctor says I have a cyst under my skin. I am wondering what it looks like under there. Have you ever removed one of these?
A Sebaceous Cyst or Epidermal Inclusion Cyst (EIC) is a non cancerous growth under the skin. They slowly get larger over time. I used to remove them more frequently than I do now as the economy slows down non-essential surgery a bit. They can frequently be removed in the office under local. I do these cases at times in the South Orange County office which has a small procedure room.
Here are a few images of such a cyst from the skin surface skin (a shoulder) and a picture of the cyst after I removed it. These cysts can rupture and get infected and are easier to remove if neither of these things happens. They can recur. It is easier and looks better if you get rid of it earlier as opposed to later.

Jersey Shore Plastic Surgery?
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on January 1, 2010
Yeah, so I have been asked about the Jersey Shore cast and possible plastic surgery. Being an Italian American with an education, it took a fair amount of resolve to actually watch the show. I do this all for you. There is a little plastic surgery to be seen here:
Jenni J-WOWW (love the nick names) – A pair of breast implants begging for revision unless they are really new. I would refer her to any of my posts on capsular contracture. She could also use some skin care. We Italian types tend to have oily skin which can give us acne and occasional pigment problems.
Snooki – May have implants as well but harder to spot. She is a bit thicker. She probably has some help in the dental department however. Not plastic surgery, but cosmetic.

John Di Saia MD
P.S. As an Italian American, do I care about the depiction of Italian American youth on the show? Nope. It is a reality show not a freaking documentary.
