Sarah Jessica Parker: Good Genes or Good Docs?

TMZ asks “Good Genes or Good Docs?”
Source: tmz.com/2009/07/26/sarah-jessica-parker-good-genes-or-good-docs/

To have a fair assessment of surgical results, you really need images right before she had her surgery. 27 years between images is not ideal. How much of this is aging, genetics and/or environment?

With that limit being stated, she has had a fair amount of work that we can see here – a blepharoplasty, forehead lift and rhinoplasty at least- probably more. Her docs seem good to me.

Reader Laura on a Chinese Plastic Surgery Report

Reader Laura’s Comment:
“Have you noticed this trend here in the US?”

Up to 80 percent of Beijing’s plastic surgery market this summer consists of senior high school and college students hoping to improve their appearance and land better jobs, according to a study on the Beijing market by China Medical Treatment Orthopedics and Beauty Association.

That proportion is expected to hit 90 percent in the coming years, the association said.

Excessive employment pressures and higher beauty standards are the leading reasons for the popularity of the surgery, said a researcher called Xu who worked on the study.

There is a trend toward job seekers utilizing cosmetic surgery in the US, but not this young and not this many percentage-wise. I’d wager the cost of cosmetic surgery in China is much less relatively speaking.

Here young people are trying more non-invasive work probably due to cost constraints. Ironically many of the treatments younger patients dabble in domestically are not very effective. There is no evidence, for example, that Botulinum toxins work to prevent the development of wrinkles in younger patients.

Not all doctors out there are so honest when the correct answer is to NOT treat someone. It is a matter of philosophy.

Sarah Burge Back At It With Plastic Surgery Gifts For Her 8 Year Old

A mother has bought her daughter cosmetic surgery vouchers worth £8,000 for her eighth birthday. Sarah Burge, who has spent £250,000 on over 100 procedures for herself, claimed that Poppy, who can redeem the vouchers when she turns 18, requested the gift. “I’m investing in my child’s future. I’m giving Poppy the freedom to do what she wants. That’s what Poppy wants for her birthday. I think she is beautiful and I don’t think anything needs to change. But the reality of life is people don’t think they look fine as they are,” Sarah told the Sunday Mirror.
Source: digitalspy.com/odd/news/a367918/mom-buys-8-year-old-gbp8k-cosmetic-surgery-voucher.html

We have heard about Sarah Burge here before….on Christmas when she gave her then 7 year old daughter liposuction vouchers worth $11,000. The gift that keeps on giving….:)

When I hear these stories I figure it is just a publicity stunt. Mama Sarah is actually “cheaping out” because last Christmas she gave in the merry amount of $11,000 and now she is only giving up $8000. When your mom is known as the “human barbie,” things might not be all that rational though. Times are tough.

Mom’s philosophy detailed in the rest of the source piece is difficult for most regular people to understand. It doesn’t make much sense to me either. While people might not be entirely OK about the way they look, it is pretty uncommon for them to spend over $250,000 to change it. Being ethical does cost me money.

Only a Third of Cosmetic Surgery Patients Happy?

According to our latest research, just over a third of cosmetic surgery patients are fully happy with their results. CosmeticSurgeryBible.com asked a number of cosmetic surgery patients how they felt about the results of their surgery. Just 37% of respondents said they were happy with their results, with 37% saying they were dissatisfied and 26% stating they had mixed emotions.

Source: cosmeticsurgerybible.com/2010/general-advice/only-a-third-of-patients-happy-with-results/936

This isn’t really surprising. The real question is who did these procedures and what kind of screening was performed. It is true that the number of doctors (and non-doctors too) offering cosmetic procedures is climbing. In Southern California, there is more Botox being performed by non-plastic surgeons than plastic surgeons. Some is being done by people with less training than a nurse. Far fewer doctors advise against a treatment for fear that the client will simply go to a local competitor.

This means less communication and more miscommunication. If there was a survey of patients of different practices regarding how happy they were, my practice would look pretty good, but of course this survey didn’t do that. Different practices work with different philosophies and produce different results. There is a lot of variability in the current cosmetic surgery marketplace.

Reconstructive Orthopedics Goes Cosmetic in the Name of Height

Bone lengthening techniques are not exactly new, but they are being used to add height to those who are unhappy with their God given proportions:

Surgeons break the leg bone in two and implant a state-of-the-art telescopic rod into the middle of the broken bones which then pulls the bone apart very slowly, about one millimeter a day. New bone grows around it and tissues like the muscle, the nerves, the arteries, and the skin, regenerate as well. At about $85,000, the procedure is expensive and the process lengthy. It takes at least three months to complete it and it requires demanding and excruciating physical therapy.

Distraction osteogenesis is a process pioneered by a Russian doctor in the 1950s by the name of Ilizarov. In a World in which general insurance-based medical procedures are paying less and less it is only natural for someone to modify the technique and sell it as cosmetic. It is the direction in which medicine is going. Re-working and re-branding reconstructive techniques into cash paying cosmetic procedures goes a long way to making you profitable.

Apparently the doctor named in the story has internalized the Ilizarov frames which were ugly when I saw them many years ago. As long as this does not introduce additional problems, it sounds pretty good.

The original frames were bulky external rods that held the broken bones with large bore pins through the skin leaving scars. These were employed in fractures complicated by the loss of bone to bring their length back to original specifications. The real changes here are the design of the frame and the re-branding it as a cosmetic service; well that and the price tag of course.

Reader Laura: Kate Upton Breast Implants?

Reader Laura’s Comment:
“This picture is of Kate Upton who is making a name for herself as a model with curves. Looking at this picture of her on the runway I noticed that her breasts seem a bit strange. There’s a gap in the middle even when they are shoved almost up to her collarbone. Do you think this is due to implants or can natural breasts look this way?”

Newer bras can make natural breasts look full and implanted, but they can also distort things. Instantaneous motion nullifying photography can isolate a bouncing breast in an unnatural pose as well. I guess the moral of the story is that even natural breasts can look strange in the right bra imaged the right way.

I believe Ms Upton is sans implants from the video I have seen of her on the runway. We can’t blame everything that looks even the least bit unusual on breast implants can we? There is nothing wrong with this woman’s breasts either.

Lindsay Lohan Looking Kinda Old

OC Register

We have posted on Lindsay Lohan here before. She has had a “party girl” lifestyle. I believe she smokes. We even suggested that a trip to jail might not be all that bad for her health. This is not just too much plastic surgery here: it is too much sun, too many cigarettes and too much partying.

Is anyone at all surprised that she looks so much older than her biological age?

Good Booty Liposuction – Orange County, Ca

Here’s a good booty liposuction result:

Good Booty liposuction

This young woman had tumescent liposuction on the sides of her thighs and booty in my South Orange County practice. These areas in the thighs are also referred to as the “saddlebags.” It could also be said that she had saddlebag liposuction. Five weeks afterward she looks nicely improved.

Moderation is the key in good liposuction planning. The results of good plastic surgery withstand the changes of time much better than when we target extremes. She achieved a nice change in shape without rippling and irregularities. This was done safely in a clean operating facility under a short anesthetic.

Paintball Ruptures Breast Implant?

A woman’s breast implant was apparently ruptured when she was shot in the chest while paintballing. Although she did not make a complaint at the time, she went to her GP two days later who told her that the implant had been punctured. The company which runs the centre said they are now issuing extra padding to all women with breast implants. An extra line has been added to an indemnity form warning paintballers that there is a risk implants can be damaged.

Source: dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2029515/Paintball-bursts-breast-implant-Croydon-woman-26.html

Breast implants can rupture for all kinds of reasons although knowing why an implant ruptured in a specific case is not easy. Saline implants are far easier to spot on rupture as they deflate almost completely over a week or two. Silicone gel implants tend to encourage scarring at rupture sites which masks the issue. This occasionally produces problems.

I am not surprised the company changed its liability statement although I doubt cases like this will be common. Breast implants will break from time to time and the center does not want to be blamed.
