Plastic surgery is like dating, with breast implants as doctors’ ultimate goal, a veteran plastic surgeon claims in Dr. Tony Youn’s new memoir “In Stitches”:
“Patient comes in for a consultation. Your first date. You make small talk, feel each other out, see if you’re compatible. …
“So, okay, the consultation goes well, you agree to see each other again. Now we’re talking Botox, collagen, that kind of thing. First base. That goes well, you move to second base. Lipo. Then you swing for the fences.”

This doesn’t sound too great. It makes it sound like plastic surgeons have a monolithic agenda when a patient comes into the office. This is of course not correct.
It is true that plastic surgery practices differ quite a bit and there are those that work in this way. I for one do not push operations or even filler or Botox injections. Patients come for advice first and foremost and if something comes of that, then that is fine.
Part of what he says has some basis in fact however. There is a “small talk” period when you first meet a new patient. The dating and “bases” simile however might be accurate for some practices, but is not basic to all plastic surgeons. That is too Hollywood.
I would like to think Dr Youn was being cute here for the sake of his readers or was taken out of context. His is not a documentary of plastic surgery, but of his experience as a plastic surgeon as far as I am concerned. I could say that I have seen practices than ran that way, but I wouldn’t be talking about my practice.
