Reader Laura’s Comment:
Are there any laws/rules that would keep a doctor from performing surgery on a family member?

To answer your question in short: I don’t think so.
That which makes this story so unusual is the commentary and the number of operations. For the doctor to say he married his wife for “potential” and then to go forth and operate on her eight times is unusual to say the least.
The questions raised include: Did she want any of this surgery?
There is a difference between this and doing some surgery on your family member who actually wants the surgery for him or herself. As usual it is a matter of degrees and this story is over the top.
Best Regards,
John Di Saia MD
P.S. Now that I have operated on my wife, this story seems even more bizarre. Then again I did not marry my wife planning on operating upon her later.

Gretchen,
I will post on this soon. The Botax returns! Thanks.
WASHINGTON – Setting up a historic year-end health care debate, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled long-awaited legislation Wednesday night to extend coverage to all but 6 percent of eligible Americans and bar private industry from denying insurance because of pre-existing medical conditions.
The Democrat’s $849 billion measure is designed to remake the nation’s health care system, relying on cuts in future Medicare spending to cover costs — as well as on higher payroll taxes for the well-to-do and a new levy on patients undergoing elective cosmetic surgery.
CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? UGGH!!
