LaViv: A Better Filler?
Posted by admin in Dr D's Truth on March 18, 2013
A friend of mine at a local media outlet was pitched a story about Laviv and asked for my thoughts. So I looked into it for her. We talked about it here once before, but I updated my search to be fair:
Laviv is a fibroblast cell product which is formulated as a tissue filler. The idea is new though. The company takes a sample of skin from behind the ear and use a little cell culture magic and make many new patient “cloned” fibroblasts. Then these are injected into the skin of that same patient in three parts separated by 5 weeks or so. The cool thing is that these are cells that should be identical to some of the cells the patient would have there already. Then again fibroblasts are basic cells to healing, but who is to say what a big pile of them injected below someone’s skin will do?
A key question is what is the long term effect here and that of course is not known. The FDA approval was based on a relatively small study showing better than placebo effects on nasolabial folds six months after a three treatment series. The study group was only 421 patients. There are post study approval requirements from the FDA; another 2700 patients to be followed.
The idea is very high tech and expensive. Another central question is how dangerous might it be (cancer, etc) and how long will the results (if we get any) last? How will Laviv compare to other products on the market which are ten to twenty times cheaper? The FDA pre-approval study did not compare it to anything but a lack of treatment. Not very encouraging.
I wouldn’t be getting too excited, but then new high tech stuff rarely gets me excited without some real proof behind it. We have little of that here.

Clean Smile Line Filler – Orange County California
Posted by admin in "Good Plastic Surgery in the OC", Dr D's Patients on February 18, 2013
Here is a smile line filler case before and 2 weeks later from my Orange County practice. The anatomic areas treated were the Nasolabial folds and Marionette lines. Not all smile line filler results need to be scary. We used a hyaluronic acid based product.
The biggest problems with filler cases tend to revolve around the large amounts of filler that some practitioner place. Moderation leads to more natural results here. You might not get all your linbes corrected but you will look human when you leave. We look at this as a reasonable trade off.

Clay Aiken – Plastic Surgery Talk
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on April 5, 2012
“I had surgery on my jaw for a TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) disorder thing and I had them suck the fat out of my chin while they were in there,” the 33-year-old Season 2 “American Idol” runner-up revealed.
Adding, “I was like, ‘You know what, while I’m already down, go ahead and take the vacuum in there and suck the fat out of my chin.”

Plastic surgeons do not do TMJ surgery. Well give Clay a break. He has a new CD to push.
While I don’t really begrudge a celebrity for using his plastic surgery history to get press to push his latest product, I am not so sure I buy the TMJ thing. Then again he might have gone to a maxillofacial surgeon. Some of them have picked up facial aesthetic work over the years.
He might have also picked up the facial filler bug. His nasolabial folds (laugh lines) are more shallow than they were years ago. This is not the way it usually happens without some help.

Lara Flynn Boyle – Plastic Surgery Talk
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on April 4, 2012
The actress, who rose to fame for her role in the 90′s mystery drama Twin Peaks, stepped out in Los Angeles Saturday with painful-looking, swollen lips. Clad in a white puffer jacket, jeans and a walking cast on her left leg, the star’s over sized mouth channeled the fillers-enhanced pouts seen on a few of her Hollywood colleagues.

Is Lara Flynn Boyle a user of plastic surgery?
Well as usual that depends upon what you want to call plastic surgery.
Is Ms Boyle a user of facial fillers?
Well looking at images over the last few years: Yes.
Her lips change shape and volume a lot which is a telltale sign of filler use. And her latest image shows central upper lip swelling most likely from very recent filler injections. They probably shot her as she left her doctor’s office.
Is this Bad plastic surgery?
Not necessarily. Fillers when first injected can look puffy. It depends upon how much is injected. It is all technique and patient preference. Some patients want more than I might think advisable.
Swelling settles down over time. How you look a week or two after a filler injection episode is much more telling than how you look immediately afterward even if things are done well.

Belotero Balance – Another Restylane?
Posted by admin in plastic surgery news on November 30, 2011
Merz Aesthetics announced that the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Belotero Balance for the correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. Belotero Balance filler is a hyaluronic acid-based cohesive gel dermal filler designed to deliver natural-looking results with little recovery time

We have discussed here on multiple occasions the confusion in the facial filler market. For quite some time my opinion has been that the hyaluronic acid-based fillers are the safest. There are several on the market.
Well now there is a new one, Belotero Balance from the makers of Radiesse. The study they quote in their materials was against a Bovine based filler which not surprisingly showed that the new product was superior. That is why the Bovine products have fallen by the wayside over the last decade.
Our e-mail to the company has not been answered regarding the issues of cross-linking, lidocaine content or physician sampling.

Cindy Crawford admits to Plastic Surgery
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on November 4, 2011
Cindy Crawford tells the U.K.’s ‘Daily Mail’ she’s been using a cosmetic surgeon for the past 11 years. It had always been assumed the Dekalb native made her millions with her natural looks, but Crawford admitted to the newspaper that she started to get extra help with her looks at the age of 29. Crawford, who is now 40 years old, says she counts on vitamin injections, botox and collagen to restore her skin’s elasticity.

The key is of course that she started off looking pretty well and has had good work. Of course I never assumed she was all natural.

Jenny JWoww Farley – Facial Cosmetic Surgery?
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on August 19, 2011
JWOWW has changed if you look at her face over the past few seasons of Jersey Shore. We have talked about her body upgrades previously. I suggested some skin care. Her cosmetic concerns appear to have moved upwards.
What may have happened?
I’d wager she lost some weight and had her laugh lines and lips treated with some fillers. It is pretty common that weight loss can make laugh lines less laughable and her upper lip was a tad thin previously. Her nasal tip looks like it has had a little work as well. So far things look good.

Britain’s Got Talent Judge Amanda Holden – Filler Queen?
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on March 31, 2011
It seems something rather strange has happened to her smile. Posing for photographers outside a London restaurant on Monday, the Britain’s Got Talent judge showed off much plumper lips. Miss Holden, 39, has always denied having anything other than Botox in her beauty regime and insisted she would never have her lips plumped.

Ms Holden has at the very least used fillers on her nasolabial folds (Laugh lines) and lips. She has likely also had her eyes done and is a Botulinium toxin user. The lips look funky as they were probably very recently treated as of the time of the image at dailymail.
Fillers tend to look funky early on unless small amounts are injected.

Rose McGowan SVU and Plastic Surgery Overload?
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on March 26, 2011
When Rose McGowan appeared on Law & Order: SVU, questions about her plastic surgery indulgences came back into the limelight with her. Back in 2007, Ms McGowan stated that an automobile accident spurred her interest in plastic surgery. She likely had a fair amount of surgery back then. There has been criticism about the magnitude of change it may have involved, but in a Hollywood starlet this is hardly surprising.
By the looks of the video clips from the show, she seems to be a continuing user of fillers and Botulinium toxins. Her facial movements appear relatively normal, but she might have been featuring a bit of the puffiness that fillers can cause. My general advice is that fillers be used conservatively to limit long term deformity.

Holly Sampson Had Had Much More Surgery Before Her “Mistress Makeover”
Posted by admin in celebrity plastic surgery on February 2, 2011
Reading about Holly Sampson and her “Mistress Makeover” of Botox and facial fillers made me giggle a little. This woman has really had a quite a bit in the way of plastic surgery over the years. Looking at images of her as a younger woman before the surgery started, she was attractive to start. She still is.
Holly has gone by several names in her mainstream and adult movie performances including Nicolette Foster. She entered the land of adult flicks as Nicolette. She was thin, and stayed sans breast implants for a while before having implant surgery. She has likely had her implants done a few times.
I am certain she is a regular facial filler and Botox client, so her Mistress Makeover was more like a “routine fill-up.” She has also had more traditional surgical facial work likely including a face lift plus or minus cheek implants or a mid face lift. Her cheek bones became more prominent over time which does not happen without some help.
All in all she looks pretty good. She hasn’t stepped over the “too much surgery” precipice as of yet.
