Reader Laura on Fat Grafts and the Breast

March 16th, 2010

Reader Laura’s Comment:

ABC has done another story about alternatives to breast implants. This new procedure involves having their own fat injected into their breasts. The new procedure involves using a vacuum pressure device that applies pressure before and after the injection. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it has the possibility of working? What would be the side effects from this procedure?

ABC

Fat grafting to the breast has been controversial in plastic surgery circles for decades. The concerns have been what might happen to the fat once it is placed into the breast. Some grafted fat has been shown to degenerate and become calcified. This change might make mammograms more difficult to interpret in women treated. The other main concern has been a question of breast hardening from scarring as this degenerating fat is processed by the body.

I saw another surgeon at a meeting a year ago present his experience with fat grafting to the breast. It is starting to look better although it seems to be limited at present size wise requiring multiple operations at a very high price tag relative to conventional breast implant surgery. With time this might be the way to go. At present more research seems indicated.

Lara Stone is not Fat

December 20th, 2009

Black Book Mag reports that model Lara Stone doesn’t want to be fat anymore.

She looks pretty thin to me, but models traditionally look to me like they need something to eat. Size 4 is thin to most of us, but in modeling it is a size or two larger than the usual size 0-1.

Modeling is a business.
