Reader Laura on UAE Plastic Surgery Story

May 3rd, 2010

Reader Laura’s Comment:

A French doctor was sentenced to one year in prison after performing a breast enlargement procedure on a 24-year-old Belarusian woman, who died after her liver and kidneys failed. Dubai Misdemeanors Court discovered that her blood became contaminated with bacteria and she was given a “wrong injection”. The doctor was charged with practicing medicine without a license. ”

It looks like the US isn’t the only place that is having problems with fake Drs hurting people.

Malpractice is hard to prove even in the United States. This doctor was apparently practicing medicine without a license. The story does not tell us whether he was a doctor at all or whether his lack of knowledge was involved in her death. It seems people everywhere need further education regarding screening their surgeons before surgery.

Solange Magnano former Miss Argentina Dies After Cosmetic Injection Procedure

December 1st, 2009

The OC Register Blog posts on the tragic death of Solange Magnano, a former beauty queen in Argentina. The details are scant at present, but reports indicate that she had a procedure that she felt was low risk as a friend said, ‘She only underwent the procedure because she thought it was no big deal.’” A day later she had a pulmonary embolus and passed away.

Reports indicate that the woman was injected with polymethylmethacrylate microspheres (PMMA) with the purpose of enhancing her rear end. PMMA is a particulate substance (like small glass beads) that can embolize (travel to other areas of the body) if inadvertently injected into blood vessels. The US supplier of PMMA is based in San Diego. Artes Medical interestingly enough filed for bankruptcy last year. PMMA was originally approved for use in making facial wrinkles less apparent. Like most soft tissue fillers, it was designed to be used in small amounts. This patient had injections for buttock enhancement presumably in much larger amounts which is probably where the potential for embolism became realized.

We have discussed other injection stories like this before; one quite recently. Bigger surgery can also lead to pulmonary emboli however. The facts are just coming out for this case. I am not sure I would even call this a plastic surgery death as we are unsure as to whether the practitioner was a plastic surgeon and we know that this was injection therapy as opposed to “real” surgery. Suffice it to say we have discussed the danger of some injection therapies before and those who frequent this blog know to ask questions before an injection procedure.

You need to educate yourself before having any cosmetic procedure performed and have it done by the most qualified practitioner you can have.

Donda West Death Fallout

June 2nd, 2008

TMZ

“Yolanda Anderson, niece of Donda and cousin of Kanye, along with Calif. Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter, introduced a bill into the Cali legislature that would require patients to receive a physical exam before plastic surgery.”

That’s great, but it is already the Standard of Care for cases involving a general anesthetic at least. If she was not examined before surgery, her surgeon could already be held below that standard. Our legal system is less than consistent. This is part of the problem.

Plastic Surgery Death in Aspiring Actress in the UK

May 6th, 2006

Times Online UK

An aspiring 20 year old actress has died due to a complication of surgery to correct her chin. It sounds like she had a large scale operation requiring her anesthesiologist to place a catheter in her heart (probably a Swan-Ganz catheter) to monitor her heart pressures. Apparently this caused damage that resulted in her death in the post-operative period.

This is terrible but extremely uncommon. Only really serious operations require placement of such a catheter. I cannot remember the last time we used one in a cosmetic case. I have been involved however in many cases involving heart catheters and have never seen such a complication. It is still terrible when a patient dies due to any operation especially one that is elective. My heart goes out to her family.
