Reader Question: Plastic Surgeon Recommendation in the OC

Do you know a good plastic surgeon for me in the OC?

I wonder if I am spending too much time blogging when I get asked a question like this one….but seriously do you expect me to recommend someone else in my practice’s backyard?

I practice in San Clemente and Orange. :)

In all seriousness, the answer to your question really depends upon what exactly you are looking to have done. I specialize on breast and body work although I also do “skin” work and some facial cosmetic surgery as well. No one “specializes” in everything. You need to do your homework to find the best for your area of choice and budget of course.

Over the Counter Scar Therapy Recommendations

As I perform Scar Revision surgery and deal with scar treatment not infrequently, people ask about over the counter scar treatments. Do any of them work?

As we have discussed before scar healing occurs in phases and treatment to minimize scars should only be done after the wound is closed and without scabbing. If you have had surgery, you should ask your surgeon when the best time to begin scar therapy has arrived. I like early treatment once the wound has achieved early healing.

I have used some of these products with my own wounds particularly after I had my triceps repaired a few years ago. The silicone sheeting products tend to be my favorites here as they do not make a mess and can be re-used. They also cover the scar keeping it away from sunlight.

Don’t be fooled by cheap sheeting products or gels. They don’t work as well.

Australian Therapeutic Goods Association Full Of Idiots

Senator Xenophon says he will move in the Senate on Wednesday for the community affairs committee to reconvene its hearing on the TGA. “Clearly there are very serious questions as to whether the actions of the TGA were appropriate and timely,” he said. “Potentially there are 4500 women in Australia with these implants.” Between 300,000 and 400,000 women in 65 countries are believed to have implants made with substandard silicon gel by the French company Poly Implant Protheses (PIP). The TGA has recommended against routine removal of these implants on the basis that there is no evidence of an increased rupture rate.

What are these guys in the TGA thinking? They obviously don’t know much about the implants about which they speak.

All silicone gel implants leak to an extent. It is called leeching. So it doesn’t even matter if these implants are ruptured. They still leak. And in the case of the PIP product, the gel inside there is low grade and contains even more than the usual amount of toxins.

My recommendation to all PIP implant patients: “Get them out.”

My recommendation to Australia: “Re-staff your TGA.”
