Reader Laura: Fatal Silicone Penis Injection
Posted by admin in Injection Hell, plastic surgery news on December 10, 2011
You read a title like this and figure this is some made up story or a joke. It is unfortunately true this time:
Reader Laura’s Comment:
“Here’s another horror story about a non-medical professional injecting silicone into someone. This time someone died. There does seem to be more and more of this happening these days and the story talks about it being the economy being the cause but I can’t imagine ever being poor enough to trust someone like the person involved in this incident. The guy who died had silicon injected into his penis. He was trying to have it enlarged and wound up getting a clot in his blood that killed him. They say that it is not unusual for the silicone to migrate to the bloodstream and form a clot. Is it ever a good idea to inject anything into your penis?”
A fake doctor injected a man’s penis with silicone, killing him, police said Friday. Justin Street visited Kasia Rivera, 34, at her home in New Jersey for the penis enhancement procedure on May 5, prosecutors say. But just a day after attending the so-called ‘pumping-party’ the 22-year-old was dead. Street suffered a clot to the lungs and died. A medical examiner determined he died of a silicone embolism.

fatal-silicon-injection-penis-enhancement-went-wrong.html
We have discussed the risk of silicone injections here many times before. In my opinion, good surgeons do not use silicone as an injectible. It just has too many ways to go wrong. The most deadly apparently happened in this case. Silicone embolism is the movement of silicone gel and/or clot in the blood vessels to a distant site. When such a gel clot finds its way to the heart, lungs or brain, it can make this a fatal injection. The relative ease of this complication is amongst the reasons silicone is not a good choice as an injectible product.
Why a man would allow a penis injection of silicone gel is not immediately obvious to me. The penis being a very vascular (blood vessel rich) organ makes the possibility of embolism quite high. This was a set up for disaster.
It is somewhat surprising that people are more frequently allowing silicone injections and silicone injection deaths are becoming more frequently reported. It is equally surprising that people allow unqualified injectors to treat them, but then again as I have mentioned most qualified injectors do not inject silicone.

Lisa Rinna Lips – Silicone Removal / Reduction
Posted by admin in Injection Hell, plastic surgery news on November 4, 2011
“Lisa Rinna Lips” is the real topic of this story:
News of the burglary overshadowed Rinna’s earlier revelation that she’s had that famous, artificially enhanced upper lip of hers reduced through cosmetic surgery. The actress, 47, revealed to People magazine she underwent the surgery in August to reduce the pillowy upper lip she had injected with silicone on a whim back in 1986. In the couple’s first segment on TODAY Tuesday, she told Meredith Vieira, “I did it because I no longer wanted my lip to define me. I had never thought that you could do anything about it, and I found out there is something you can do. I had no idea you could reduce it, so I was like, ‘Yes! Let’s do it.’ ”
Source: today.msnbc.msn.com/id/39517415/ns/today-entertainment/
As Ms Rinna was doing her media rounds for her reality show, the subject of her famous lips of course came up. She apparently described her recent procedure as a lip reduction. This was much more likely a “removal” operation designed to cut out the silicone scar from her silicone injections of years prior. Liquid silicone when injected into soft tissue does not usually stay soft over time. It frequently becomes encased in firm scar at times forming hard lumps which can hurt.
Lip surgery to remove old silicone injected there is the only real way to improve people who have had silicone lip injections. Ms Rinna’s lips were becoming kinda funky. It is difficult to know how much of this was the silicone and how much might have been something else she had used. Surgical excision (in Ms Rinna’s case reduction) is not always feasible. Hers worked out well by report.
The better alternative when first considering lip augmentation is to choose a safer filler and use a moderate amount at most. Silicone injections are best avoided. Hyaluronic acid based fillers (Restylane, Prevelle, etc) are much safer, but do not last too long.

Silicone Injections Deadly for Bronx Woman
Posted by admin in bad plastic surgery, Injection Hell on September 1, 2011
NEW YORK (CBS) ― A seemingly harmless cosmetic procedure turned deadly for a Bronx woman. She died one day after receiving silicone injections in her thighs, allegedly administered by someone without a medical license.

Silicone injections are scary. No reputable plastic surgeon offers them to my knowledge. Do not submit to them.
Pichardo was rushed to the hospital but died the next morning of what the medical examiner’s officer said was a silicone pulmonary embolism, caused by so much silicone injected that it was clotting in her lungs.
FDA-approved fillers when used appropriately of course do not do this problem. Silicone injections are not FDA-approved.

Silicone Injections Lead To More Death
Posted by admin in Injection Hell, plastic surgery complications, plastic surgery news on June 15, 2011
Patients who get massive silicone injections to enlarge their breasts or buttocks should expect trouble, local cosmetic doctors say. Especially if the silicone isn’t a medical-grade product, the procedure can lead to disfigurement or death. That’s what apparently happened to the patients of Guadalupe Viveros, who allegedly ran an unlicensed cosmetic-injection clinic out of her home in Sylmar, Calif. Police are seeking Viveros and her business partner, sister Alejandra Viveros, in connection with the death of a patient.
The buttocks are “one of the worst places for injections,” said plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente and Anaheim. Large quantities of material must be injected there to make a difference in their appearance, but that is risky, because the buttocks contain so many blood vessels, he said. That is reportedly what caused the death last year of former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, who had died after getting buttock injections of microspheres of PMMA plastic, which apparently blocked an artery in her lungs.
I chimed in on this one as you can read. Silicone injections are bad news. You should steer clear of them.

Reader Laura Comments on Silicone Injector Bust
Posted by admin in Injection Hell, plastic surgery news on May 5, 2011
Reader Laura’s Comment:
“A Bronx woman has been arrested for running a clinic inside of her apartment where she offered boob and butt injections. She used silicone imported from her native Dominican Republic. The feds even found a residue of crazy glue on some of the medical waste. I can’t even imagine what she would have done with the crazy glue. I can’t imagine how it is ever acceptable to ever go to someone’s apartment for a medical procedure. This woman even discouraged one woman who was having complications from seeking medical treatment. Do you think anything could have been done to prevent this from happening?”
Whalesca Castillo, 36, who the feds claim is an unlicensed doctor, was arrested at her home this morning on Inwood Avenue in the Mount Eden section after she was mailed, via FedEx, “a silicone substance” she used as part of an illegal clinic she was operating out of her apartment.

Silicone injections are dangerous. We have previously discussed stories of silicone injection-related death when large amounts have been injected into breasts and buttocks. We have also reported on the smaller injection related problems such as distortion and painful lumps like those experienced by Lisa Rinna leading her to having her enlarged lips reduced. The problem is that there are still people who are poorly informed and submit to less-than-qualified injectors injecting ill-advised substances into their bodies under sub-standard conditions. People have to exercise judgment when considering these treatments. Apartment-based clinics and other black market enterprises do not operate where law enforcement can easily find them.
To answer your “crazy glue question,” the hordes of the unqualified are reportedly using crazy glue to close their access incisions. If a surgeon can’t even get his or her hands on proper sutures to close your wounds, you are probably better off not having that procedure.

Sexy Cora Death & Extreme Breast Implant Surgery
Posted by admin in plastic surgery complications, plastic surgery news on April 15, 2011
Ms Berger, a sex film celebrity, had joined the German version of Big Brother last year, where she behaved more and more outrageously. She embarked on a series of breast enlargements in a bid to keep her publicity going. Hamburg prosecutors are investigating her doctors for negligence. Ms Berger was put in an artificial coma on 11 January because of serious complications after her sixth operation, which took place at a clinic in the north German city. It is believed she suffered two cardiac arrests after the procedure to enlarge her breasts from a 70F to a 70G (UK: 34F to 34G). She had wanted to increase the size of her silicone breast enhancements from 500g (18oz) to 800g (28oz) each, Bild newspaper reported.

Trying to hit the record books by placing larger and larger implants has consequences. This 23 year old woman died after complications developed with her sixth breast implant operation. The woman reportedly weighted only 106 pounds yet wanted her 500 g silicone gel implants replaced with 800 g implants.
We have discussed here the increased risk that patients accept in targeting really large implant sizes. Sheyla Hershey became the World’s largest implant patient but later developed infection and had her implants removed. She suffered deformity and will likely need reconstructive operations to limit that deformity.
Ms Berger (who apparently went by a number of other names) passed away from pushing surgery to extremes. Her exact cause of death might never be publicly known. Suffice it to say, six operations to achieve a super large cosmetic breast result in a 23 year old woman are extreme and therefore carry much higher risk than the norm.
The Huffington Post reported that the 800 g of silicone was injected as “free silicone,” meaning not contained in an implant. That explains the heart stopping and the negligent manslaughter charge. Free silicone is all too free. It can move throughout the body in the blood vessels (as it probably did in this case) and even when it doesn’t it tends to scar horribly. Large volume injections have been associated with death before. To answer a comment, this must have been a substandard surgical outfit.
Better results can be obtained and are obtained in skilled hands using good judgment daily. This was not one of those cases and was eminently avoidable.

Hip Hop Wannabe Dead of Hotel Silicone Booty Injection
Posted by admin in Injection Hell, plastic surgery news on February 10, 2011
This is British wannabe hip-hop star Claudia Aderotimi, who died after an illegal cosmetic procedure to enhance her bottom went tragically wrong. The university student, 20, flew to Philadelphia, US, for silicone jabs to increase the curve of her buttocks. But Claudia, of Hackney, East London, suffered chest pains after the injections and died in hospital. US cops are investigating.

Silicone injections lead to nightmares. Read the section here at the blog entitled “Injection Hell.” There are quite a few stories.
Points to Keep You Safe:
(1) Injectable substances are not all the same. Silicone gel injections carry risk. In small quantities we can get “Lisa Rinna Lips” which are inflamed painful lumps of silicone and scar that only occasionally can be cut out without deformity. In larger quantities (such as booty shots) the stuff can get into the blood vessels and travel to the heart and lungs leading to death. Go to a reputable plastic surgeon when considering soft tissue augmentation. You will find we don’t offer silicone injections.
(2) You are unlikely to meet a reputable plastic surgeon at a hotel room. We occasionally present to groups at hotel meeting halls as promotions. Meeting you at a hotel is a maybe. Operating there is a giant red flag.

Beware Snake Oil Salesmen? – Daniel Serrano
Posted by admin in Injection Hell, plastic surgery news on August 13, 2010
Beware snake oil salesmen like Daniel Serrano. Maybe the list of celebrities treated by this man like Priscilla Presley should have. Serrano was reportedly smooth with sweet talk and promises:
Serrano, who was a doctor in Argentina but unlicensed in the U.S., told patients the serum, which he claimed would remove wrinkles, was much better than Botox — an all-natural drug he said was used by all the top models in Paris

Silicone gel injections are not natural. They do not do well. Qualified plastic surgeons will not offer them.

Butt Injection Nightmare x 6
Posted by admin in Injection Hell on May 31, 2010
NEWARK, N.J. — A black-market butt-enhancement “practitioner” is injecting New Jersey backsides with household caulk and other hazardous materials, according to New Jersey health officials who have alerted New York authorities to the rear and present danger.
Six Newark-area women in the last two months have been hospitalized with infections caused by injections of “a variety of unknown materials,” said New Jersey Health Department epidemiologist Dr. Tina Tan.
Officials said they believe the injected mixture includes silicone, petroleum jelly and hardware-grade caulk.
It frequently amazes me how trusting some people are of the wrong people. Would you go to a local hotel to have injection therapy performed? Six women were hospitalized here. Butt injections are not all that safe or effective in any environment, but a hotel?
Just steer clear of this OK?
